WP3 - Energy Efficiency Solutions

Objective

Development of technical solutions for the energy enhancement of historic buildings, integrating passive and active solutions.
The multidisciplinary approach should brings together expertise from different fields, leading to a new and integrated vision of the object and the development of adequate components and systems, accepted by all stakeholders.
The attention will be focussed on a finite number of innovative solutions or novel uses of existing solutions for each task.

Integration of technical and cultural heritage issues

As a basis for the project and the musltidisciplinary workshop in Spring 2011 (Bologna), a common document on the state of the art of energy efficiency solutions for historic buildings is compiled. Based on the multidisciplinary discussion (specifically in the workshop held in spring 2011 in Bologna, however cultivated throughout the project) criteria for the assessment of conservation-compatibility of energy efficiency interventions are formulated.

Development of energy efficiency solutions

Development of energy efficiency solutions in line with the priorities and compatibility criteria developed in WP2. A strong interrelation with the case studies is expected, for which specific feasibility studies including the newly developed solutions will be delivered and in part new products or new applications of existing products will be tested and results fed back to the development. The results of WP3 are however generally applicable, since they do also transfer the case study results to other climates or other conservation restrictions.

The following themes are treated in subtasks:
  • Internal insulation
  • Airtightness
  • Moisture transport problems at beam ends
  • Windows Integration of shading systems within window/glazing system
  • Integration of space saving ventilation systems with heat recovery
  • Analysis of the cost-effictiveness of automatic air flow volume balancing in heat recovery ventilation
  • Daylighting
  • Artificial lighting
  • Passive heating & cooling
  • Active energy efficiency solutions
  • RES integration
Results are made available in Virtual library for energy efficiency solutions, accessible through the project website.

Comprehensive and integrated energy refurbishment solutions

Integrated application of the solutions developed in Task 3.2 on case studies. Starting from the real case, optimisation of integrated solutions for (i) different kinds of utilisation, (ii) different climates and (iii) different conservation restrictions. Assessment of materials and technologies sustainability, effectiveness depending is expected to depend on the climate.

Summary for local governments

Compilation of a summary results document (e-guide) highlighting results of technical and sustainable energy improvements / assessments to be used to improve understanding among decision-makers (e.g. municipal building managers) – also feeding into WP6 (transferability / case studies).
